Path of Exile

Auckland's Grinding Gear Games have released their first public trailer for Path of Exile, an upcoming free-to-play MMORPG (monetized by perks). Check it out:

I have to admit, when I first heard of the project I was skeptical that it was much more than yet another overly ambitious attempt to make an MMORPG. However the game is shaping up very nicely so I am pleased to have been proven utterly wrong. There's a very real chance this game will be the next 'big thing' in the RPG world.

Yeah, it certainly looks good.

And you can't go wrong with a free game, i'll definitely be giving this a go when it comes out.

Like you I had initial reservations, but the guys have really proven that they know their RPGs and have distilled the best bits of the genre.  The fact that they're gotten pretty much universally positive feedback from some pretty experienced and discerning gaming press is a good sign.  They're not trying to get a 'bigger audience' (like Torchlight or Diablo 3) but know 100% who their target audience. Only a few points for originality, but lots of points for knowing what they're doing.

@Michael yeah, the free thing will definitely mean that I'll check it out.

@Stephen I do think something very well done is better than something very original. Back in the day Serious Sam was great because it avoided innovating and instead focused on an action packed Doom 1 & 2 like experience.

In other words, if it ain't broke, why fix it?
