Derelict 1.2 Release Candidate 3

Thanks to a crash log that was emailed in (cheers Justin) I may have finally solved the black screen bug, though this still needs confirmation.

Basically, the bug seems to boil down to a 'NaN' (Not a number) glitch, where the currently selected marine is moved to a set of co-ordinates that don't actually exist (hyperspace?) because of a mathematical error (divide by zero etc) and the camera is dragged with him. Since the camera is in a place that doesn't exist, it can't render anything, and hence everything goes black.

So, it would be really cool if someone who was getting the black screen bug before could confirm that it's gone. Exact same method as before:

  1. Download the just uploaded Derelict 1.2 RC3 (from here) OR just copy the Derelict 1.2 RC3 executable (here) over top of your existing Derelict 1.2 RC1-2 installation.
  2. If you get a black screen bug, press CTRL-F4 to quit
  3. Pressing CTRL-F4 also produces a crash report (crash.txt). Email that directly to me (earok3d at gmail dot com) along with details on the OS, Graphics Card, Ram and CPU in your computer, as well as what you were doing in the game at the time of the crash.

Really hope I have finally nailed the sucker on the head!

Earok.Net now has forums!

Pretty much on a whim, I have decided to put forums on the site.

I am going to treat my site as a hybrid blog/forum, where instead of making blog posts I'll make forum posts and promote them to the front page. In fact, this is the very first forum topic on my website. I can also promote forum posts by other people to the front page as well.

There isn't a lot to see on the forum page at the moment. I'm not sure if my forums will gain the critical mass needed to get a web community going, but hopefully they'll be useful for discussing my games and the topics I talk about on my blog. Head on over to the forum page and have a look.

Oh, and you can sign up for accounts now, cheers.

Derelict's "Black screen" bug

Well, it looks like even the new 1.2 RC1 version of Derelict has the black screen bug on some computers.

...bugger

Aaand I'm simply not going to officially release Derelict 1.2 until this bug is fixed. I had a similar bug in my Project Firestart remake that was partially to blame for it getting a critical mauling from the Retro Remakes judges. So I need a hand from anyone who can help.

So, if anyone is getting their bug on their computer, it would really be helpful if you could go through the following steps:

  1. Download the just uploaded Derelict 1.2 RC2 (from here) OR just copy the Derelict 1.2 RC2 executable (here) over top of your existing Derelict 1.2 RC1 installation.
  2. Play the game until you get a black screen bug, and then press CTRL-F4 to quit
  3. Pressing CTRL-F4 also produces a crash report (crash.txt). Email that directly to me (earok3d at gmail dot com) along with details on the OS, Graphics Card, Ram and CPU in your computer, as well as what you were doing in the game at the time of the crash.

If you send me through a crash report I can also add you to the credits if you'd like. Thanks in advance.

Edit - oh, and it'd be nice to know if the same bug happens on your computer on Derelict 1.1, which would narrow the fault down to something that was introduced between that version and the new one.

Derelict 1.2 Release Candidate 1

Derelict 1.2 RC1 is now online, and can be downloaded here. This will become the release version if all of the show-stopping bugs have been fixed.

Bugs fixed:

  1. Multi-view camera is hidden for empty team slots
  2. Problems with seeing through walls have been reduced, but not completely removed
  3. Can't walk outside the level at certain points (I hope!)
  4. Sound issues during the final boss fight

There has been an issue with the screen suddenly going blank on some computers, particularly on Level 1-4. I'm not sure if it has been resolved or not as the issue does not happen on my computer and so I have no way to replicate it, but I've tided up some areas of the code base that could be responsible.

Features added:

  1. Marine speech can be turned off
  2. Nicer enemy spawn point effect
  3. Can't select dead Marines, when cycling through your team with space it will only switch to alive ones
  4. New Playtester names have been added to the credits and manual
  5. Licence (loosely based on the BSD one) has been included. In effect, you can do whatever you want with the game (republish, mod etc) as long as the licence is included unmodified with any re-releases

Once again, big thanks to all you awesome playtesters. I'm most interested in hearing if the screen-blanking bug has been fixed, can anyone please confirm/deny this?

R.I.P 3D Realms

Earlier this week, 3D Realms (formerly Apogee) was disbanded for lack of funding. I guess this finally brings development of Duke Nukem Forever to a close, after more then a decade of development (Random trivia: Development started two months before development started on Daikatana).

Their last in-house developed game they released was Shadow Warrior back in 1997, though they did produce some popular titles with other development houses (Like Max Payne and Prey). I'm surprised that they managed to last this long with little more then the promise of a long delayed game that couldn't possibly hope to live up to expectations.

I feel sad about their demise as 3D Realms/Apogee developed or published many of my favourite PC games from my youth (Rise of the Triad, Terminal Velocity, Wolfenstein 3D and of course the Duke Nukem games). But, who knows, perhaps the rights for Duke Nukem will fall into the hands of a company that can make a worthy sequel.

Special thanks to all of the Derelict play testers

Quite a few playtest reports streamed in today, I think the new version now has more official playtesters then any of the previous versions! I haven't got time to answer all of your individual emails right now (have been very busy today and only have a few minutes free now) but I need each of you guys to know that I really appreciate all you've done to support the game and I know I will be able to put your advice to good use.

So, special thanks to:

Guilherme Chirinéa
Jim Harkins
Joshua Smyth
Matthew Gatland
Philip Truax
Sam Jeffreys

I'll try to personally respond to each email tomorrow. Cheers for now.

New Derelict Beta

Feedback for the beta version is starting to trickle in, thanks especially to Matt Gatland and Philip Truax for their exceptionally helpful feedback.

A revised edition of the 1.2 Beta (version B) is now available for download here.

Bugs fixed

  1. Enemy animation
  2. Misc sound issues
  3. Bug that stopped the map from displaying on some computers (Game would be virtually unplayable without this!)
  4. Walls don't clip as badly
  5. Defaults to fullscreen instead of windowed

New features / changes

  1. Getting attacked from sides/behind no longer results in instant death, and you have a chance to fight back. This should make the game more "fair".
  2. Screen turns red when you're under attack, should make it clearer when you're being attacked from behind!
  3. Rifle sound isn't as muted
  4. Drawing distance has been extended
  5. Maximum detail level is now 20

It's still in beta as there are a few more unresolved issues to deal with. If you're still playtesting it, I recommend downloading the new version and extracting that over your existing copy (save games and configuration files won't be overwritten.)

Thanks again for everyone who has taken the time to help me with the beta.

Voxelstein 3D

A while ago I was planning to post a quick review of Voxelstein 3D on my blog but forgot about it until today.

Voxelstein 3D is an experimental remake/parody of Wolfenstein 3D, still in the early stages of production. What makes it stand out is everything in the game is made out of "Voxels" (3D Pixels, untextured cubes with uniform dimensions assembled to form three dimensional images) rather then flat sprites or polygons.

Asides from giving the game a highly unique look, it brings some unique mechanics as well. For instance, not only is nearly everything destructible but it is also deformable - if you have enough time and patience, you could probably make a wood carving out of a tree with a knife.

I thought that a video would be more informative then  screenshots, so I stole this video from youtube (cheers to seebee for this)

While it is fascinating from a technical and aesthetic viewpoint, outside of blowing everything up there isn't much fun to be had. There are also some images in the game that are as pointless as they are blatantly offensive (A poster of the Virginia Tech murderer, for instance). Enemy AI is pretty basic, and the rooms are very compact so there is no room for running battles.

Regardless, I feel that the game has some good potential, and is worth playing for a few minutes. The current demo can be downloaded from http://voxelstein3d.sourceforge.net/

Random trivia - Voxelstein 3D's engine is based on "Voxlap" by Ken Silverman, creator of early FPS Ken's Labyrinth and Duke Nukem 3D's Build engine.

Cactus's new platformer

If you've been following any of the major indie game blogs you've probably seen this already, but it's so mindblowing that I have had to post it here too.

This is one of the new games by Cactus, an incredible looking 3D platformer. I really have no idea how he even mentally conceives these games, let alone actually develops it, in Game Maker of all things!

Also - Still haven't had any playtester reports or feedback on Derelict 1.2 (except for some positive comments from beefok, cheers man) so I may have to delay the official release of 1.2 for another week or so.

I'm extremely surprised to find that even though the old Derelict (not counting Sam's mirror, which probably counts for more then half the number of downloads) has been downloaded 33 times this month, the new beta has only been downloaded 6 times!

Derelict 1.2 Beta release - Need help please!

Well, the Derelict 1.2 Beta is up, you can grab it for a very limited time here

Still a few horrendous bugs in it. Haven't gotten around to tweaking the AI yet, I think the walking animation for the enemies is busted, and music seems to play up really badly on the last level. Experienced really bad slow down on a couple of levels though I was running on full graphics in debug mode, so that may have been the cause. Also multi-view mode still Isn't working 100%. I'll do a few cram sessions on the source code over the weekend to hopefully fix all of the serious bugs and even throw in a couple more features.

Anyway, I'm really interested in your comments. If you find the time to have a look at the beta between now and next Tuesday, could you please answer a couple of questions for me?

1. Asides from what I have listed, what bugs, if any, have you found?

2. Was there anything from the previous version that you thought worked better then in this one?

3. Any miscellaneous comments or feature requests?

4. Would you like to be credited as a playtester, if so how would you like to be credited?

Just email me (earok3d at gmail dot com) or use the contact form under the About dropdown or leave a comment on this post.

Oh - and, it'd be really cool if you post that I'm after help on your favourite freeware/indie game forum. Cheers!
